UNOi – Transformando experiencias divertidas en aprendizajes (UNOi – Transforming fun experiences into learning)

In the debates over “disruption,” learning processes are not usually the protagonists. Although our environment is rapidly changing, the way we explore and learn is not evolving at the same pace. Understanding this situation, the UNOi Project puts forth a disruptive model to transform traditional leaning processes by placing children at the center of the educational process so that they learn in an active and didactic way and generate emotional ties with knowledge. There are no frontiers between subjects, and the children explore and learn through problem-solving and dynamics in which they play a significant role. The strategies of the project are based on pedagogical evidence, the role of technology to enhance learning, and the importance of ongoing training of educators. The model is flexible and has been implemented in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.

Problematic

Education in Latin America and the Caribbean has not evolved in step with the needs of today’s world. Traditional teaching models focus above all on the role of the teacher and provide few opportunities for exploration, research, and creativity for children at an early age through the use of play and group activities. It is necessary to introduce innovative pedagogical practices in order to ensure that learning takes place and to close skill gaps starting at an early age.

Solution

UNOi consists of a teaching model based on pedagogical evidence, technology, training of teachers, and continuous monitoring. The design of teaching materials and strategies is arranged so that the children are at the center of their own learning process. Siloed subjects give way to discovery, creativity, exploration, and formative experiences using an integrated approach: the children learn mathematics, language, and personal and social development, and they explore the world in a natural way based on their experiences. Teachers are also encouraged to offer differentiated instruction, and there is a development program for reading and writing with the aim of improving the experience of each child. The classroom materials focus on exploration of the world, creativity, and imagination through stories, motor development, and good habits.
