Nenê do Zap (Zap Baby)

“To talk with Nenê, you just have to say hi here.” With this simple invitation, this initiative takes full advantage of the most popular social networks to send short, simple, playful messages twice a week on early childhood development activities and information. Through WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, Nenê do Zap provides free information in simple language to an ample audience. By using the most widespread message platforms, this innovation saves parents the chore of downloading new digital tools that tend to be difficult to deal with.

Problematic

In Latin America and the Caribbean, a large number of girls and boys do not have access to adequate levels of interaction with their caregivers. Quality interactions with mothers, fathers and caretakers are crucial for their proper development. And yet, adequate information on the key role of play, conversations, and other activities for ECD is not always easily available. Despite the technological advances of the information age, there is still a need to find digital tools that are well known, are easy to use, and that deliver quality information in simple language on how best to incorporate effective childcare and rearing practices.

Solution

The initiative provides content delivered over a variety of social networks (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) with information on the importance of strengthening ties and interacting with children from early childhood. Parents only have to send a message saying “hi” to Nenê’s cellphone number to receive short messages twice a week with evidence-based early childhood development recommendations on how to interact with children. The initiative also issued guidelines on childcare and rearing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
