Lumiar –– An initiative to transform education

Children are explorers by nature. Despite this, many learning strategies continue to give more importance to memorization and repetition instead of discovery, interaction, and play. Lumiar is an innovative methodology in which the activities, rules, and interactions are designed and defined according to the interests of the children. Each activity has a learning function, from play and the exploration of space to nutrition instruction that provides opportunities to teach healthy habits from an early age. The learning process is adapted to the pace of each child and the activities are designed and planned in conjunction with trained teachers and tutors. Lumiar is an initiative committed to laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

Problematic

Education in Latin America and the Caribbean has not evolved with the needs of today’s world.  Traditional teaching models focus above all on the role of the teacher and provide few opportunities for exploration, research, and creativity for children at an early age through the use of play and group activities. It is necessary to introduce innovations in pedagogical practices in order to ensure that learning takes place and to close skill gaps starting at an early age.

Solution

Lumiar is a methodology inspired by Emmi Pikler and Reggio Emilia that is focused on exploration, curiosity, play, and interaction with the environment. The methodology revolves around two values: autonomy and affection. The principles of the methodology focus on active learning, the training of families, personalized comprehensive development, and language development. The spaces are designed to foster the development of autonomy among the children and motivate them to explore and be active participants in their learning. In addition, Lumiar includes a nutrition program with a pedagogical function to help children develop healthy and sustainable habits.
